European betting firm William Hill announced that it has already stop accepting casino or poker bets from clients in the United States.
"William Hill has today taken steps to cease accepting casino and poker business from clients with a US address or US issued credit card" pending the clarification of existing laws concerning online gambling in the country, William Hill said in a statement delivered to the London Stock Exchange Wednesday, Sept. 27.
"Such steps are already in place to prevent Internet sports betting by US domiciled individuals," the statement further said.
Online sports gambling contravenes the 1961 Wire Act in the US, which prohibits the placing of wagers on sporting events through the telephone in the United States.
The issue of online gambling has been a hot issue in recent months as a number of British-listed gaming company bosses faced arrest and charges for accepting online bets from US residents. The chairman of online gambling website Sportingbet resigned earlier this month after being arrested while on a trip to the United States.
Peter Dicks, 64, was arrested at JFK Airport in New York under United States laws covering "gambling by computer". His arrest came hot on the heels of the high profile arrest of BetOnSports former CEO David Carruthers in Texas.
