Strategies for Playing Short Handed Poker

Just as there are different ways to approach and play No Limit cash and tourney games, so too when it comes to full table and short handed Poker. Therefore before looking for a short handed Poker table, you should be aware of the following strategies that you will need.

The most important characteristic that distinguishes short handed Poker is that with fewer players (five or less) it means fewer cards that you can work with. This translates to the need to play more aggressively.

Unlike in full table Poker, you simply cannot afford to wait for the ideal hand to come to you in short handed Poker. Chances are, it will not come, or by the time it does, you will be so far behind.

Another thing that you must understand is that the Ace is very valuable in short handed games. It is so too in full tables, but only if it is paired with another high card. In short handed Poker, an Ace paired with virtually any hand is good enough to call or raise.

Of course if you also get face cards then you can use them to bet so that you can force as many players to fold as quickly as possible.

Continuation bets can be an effective strategy in short handed Poker especially if you have a strong hand. This puts pressure on the others on the table to act quickly. But even if you do not have a premium, it can be used as a bluff. Of course, this can also be utilized against you. Here you will see the importance of learning to read your opponents.

In short handed Poker everyone knows that being aggressive is key, so you should try and determine if your opponents are truly being aggressive, have a strong hand or are just bluffing. At the same time, try to look at yourself.

Are you giving away signals that can be read and interpreted by your opponents? Although it can be difficult to control one's actions, particularly when you are dealt a big or low hand, it has to be, and can be learned.

Understanding the differences between full table and short handed Poker involves other factors, but these are the ones that will help you get accustomed to the game.

The difference between the amateurs and the pros is that the former plays the cards, and the latter plays the hands and the players. Do this and you will have the edge against your opponents in short handed Poker.
